Delhi : Sony is returning to the market for portable consoles, but not in the way you may expect. On Thursday, the Japanese corporation announced a brand-new portable gaming system internally known as "Project Q." The declaration was made live on PlayStation Showcase by Sony.

The new gadget won't be a PlayStation Vita successor; instead, it will be a cloud gaming platform like the Logitech G Cloud and Razer Edge. This indicates that neither the Steam Deck nor Nintendo's well-known Switch system are intended competitors for the portable console. The gadget, whose name hasn't been revealed yet, is primarily designed to be used for PS Remote Play through a wifi connection, necessitating the installation of games on the PlayStation 5.

Sony said that the handheld will include an eight-inch HD screen and "all the buttons and features" found on a DualSense controller, but the corporation withheld information about the handheld's main features, specifications, and performance. Many players are still baffled by Project Q's capabilities when it's not connected to Wi-Fi or streaming games from a PS5. The pricing of the device has not been disclosed by Sony, but it has vowed to do so "in the coming months."

Play on handheld devices has resumed

Sony's decision to make a streaming handheld gaming return shows how the market for portable consoles has evolved. Despite having a rival like Nintendo, the Tokyo-based electronics giant used to be a key participant in the handheld console market. The PlayStation Vita, released in 2012, was Sony's final entry into the portable gaming industry.

Sony opted to leave the market when the product failed to become a best-seller. A lot of firms left the market for specialised portable consoles during those years as mobile gaming grew quite popular. But it was the Switch that gave the market for portable consoles a fresh lease of life, and ever since then, it has only been growing. To compete with the Switch, companies like Valve, Asus, Logitech, and Razer have introduced portable gaming devices in recent years.
