China coronavirus death toll surges to 2000

New Delhi : The death toll in China due to deadly coronavirus has surged to 2000 on Wednesday after 132 more deaths were recorded officially in Hubei province, the epicenter of the outbreak.

In the daily update, the province's health commission also claimed to register 1,693 new cases of people infected with the virus.

With this, the total number of infected people has gone to 74,000.

The cases majorly belong to Hubei where the outbreak of coronavirus was reported in December last year.

According to local reports from China, most cases are of mild illness.

China's health authority has also claimed that the country has managed to contain the virus and the numbers are decreasing outside Hubei province.

President Xi Jinping, in a phone call with the British prime minister, said China's measures were achieving "visible progress", according to state media Tuesday.

However, the World Health Organization has cautioned that it was too early to tell if the decline would continue.
