Kabul : Afghanistan sports chief has given a shocking statement, saying that Taliban will allow more than 400 sports but maintained that women will not be allowed to play even a single one.

"Please don't ask more questions about women," Bashir Ahmad Rustamzai told news agency AFP.

He was appointed Afghanistan's director general for sports and physical education a couple of days back when Taliban announced the list of names of ministers of its government in the nation.

Once the wrestling federation chief when the Taliban were last in power, Rustamzai then worked with the Western-backed government, before falling out with them because of "their widespread corruption," he said.

He passed questions over allowance of women to play different sports.

It must be noted that during their last regime from 1996 to 2001, women in Afghanistan were completely banned from taking part in any sports. In fact, sports stadiums were used for execution of people.

"We will not ban any sport, unless it does not comply with sharia law... there are 400 type of sports allowed," Rustamzai said.

Ducking question on women playing the sports, he mentioned that they are still awaiting a decree from top Taliban leadership.
