US lockdown may end next month: Expert

New York : The United States is gradually looking for options to restart the businesses and bring back the normalcy in the economy. A government's top infectious diseases expert on Sunday said that the country may start reopening by next month.

Earlier, President Donald Trump had desired to bring back the normalcy by the Easter, but many places celebrated the day with closed churches and coronavirus lockdown. More than 22,000 people have been reported dead in the US due to COVID-19 virus.

Donald Trump has called the decision to release lockdown as the biggest decision to be made during his Presidency.

Anthony Fauci, the veteran pandemic expert who has quietly sought action to stem infections, said in a televised interview that parts of the country could begin easing restrictions in May -- but was cautious.

"I think it could probably start at least in some ways maybe next month," Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN.

"We are hoping by the end of the month we can look around and say, OK, is there any element here that we can safely and cautiously start pulling back on?" Fauci said.

"If so, do it. If not, then just continue to hunker down."
