Opinion: Dear ministers, not right to forget social distancing at any cost

Bhopal : Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday evening took oath as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for the fourth time. This was definitely a happy time for the new leadership that is taking over to guide the state to a new direction.

The ceremony comes at a time when India is adopting lockdowns, curfews and social distancing to combat the deadly coronavirus that has claimed 468 positive cases in the nation till the time this article was written. 10 people have died of the disease, forcing 22 states in India to adopt complete lockdown.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders from several political parties have been alerting people to stay away from each other, do not shake hands, wash hands and maintain at least one-meter distance while interacting with the other person.

But then there is this picture from the Sunday evening ceremony where the leaders can be seen cheering the occasion hand in hand and accumulated in a mid-size group. Point to be noted is that most of them are at an age where immunity to fight coronavirus could be put as a big question.

This picture is a perfect example of how social distancing must NOT be done. Also, this picture is no motivation for people who have been putting themselves indoors to keep the nation healthy.

Such ceremonies could have been done with only limited leaders and with complete precautions and measures of social distancing.

On Monday morning, PM Narendra Modi noted the act and asked people to stay indoors and follow the directives by the Central and State Government. He also urged state authorities to ensure the lockdown is properly followed.

"People are not taking the lockdown properly. Kindly save yourself and your family; follow the guidelines with sincerity and responsibly. I request all the state authorities to ensure that people follow guidelines," PM Modi tweeted in Hindi.

When we all know the complications the disease can bring with it; why not follow what experts and researchers are asking us to do?

For those who are not aware, social distancing or physical distancing is a set of nonpharmaceutical infection control actions intended to stop or slow down the spread of a contagious disease. The objective of social distancing is to reduce the probability of contact between persons carrying an infection, and others who are not infected, so as to minimize disease transmission, morbidity and ultimately, mortality.

News Heads urges all its readers to stay indoors and if they are moving out in an emergency situation, they must follow all rules and regulations to ensure their safety.
